Although at a slow pace, we finally see a structural change in Brazilian education. Since the beginning of the application of Enem, educators started to discuss the theme of competences in more depth.
However, it is likely that the recent effort to implement the BNCC will formalize the changes in the curricula more forcefully. Do you want to understand what really changes in schools? So, don’t miss this article!
The objectives of implementing BNCC
The official government propaganda states that the creation of the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) aims to reduce the differences between public and private education in Brazil. We know that, unfortunately, there is a discrepancy between the performance of students in these two systems, except in some very specific cases.
However, when analyzing the BNCC proposal, it is clear that it allows us to do more than that. Its guidelines, if well applied, resignify the role of content in the school. Thus, the Base promotes a higher quality not only of knowledge sharing, but especially in the fact that the content is no longer an end to itself and becomes a means to develop competencies.
As we have already said, since the creation of Enem, educators have tried to go deeper into the study of skills. However, perhaps the way in which this topic has surfaced in Brazil has not been the most effective. After all, they were first used as the central concept of a national assessment to, long after, have a systematization that allows a coherent application in the classroom.
The role of areas, disciplines and competencies at BNCC
To make this debate more concrete, let’s talk about some components and competencies established by the Base. First, before thinking about the concept of discipline, we need to understand that they are inserted in five major areas of knowledge: Language, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Human Sciences and Religious Education.
Each of these areas encompasses several disciplines. In language, for example, we have Portuguese, Arts, Physical Education and English. From this division, it is expected that the school takes actions to promote the development of certain skills in the student. Speaking specifically in the Portuguese language, the Base proposes the following skills:
Therefore, in this new conception, the focus is not to make the student appropriate linguistic concepts mechanically. He needs to understand how the author uses, each word, each resource and each type of construction to produce the desired idea and provoke the reader to reflect. Thus, he understands communication as an intentional activity and acquires the ability to receive it critically and use it effectively.
The challenges of implementing BNCC
As you can see, it is not simply a list of contents that will be covered in each teaching stage, but to re-framing its purpose and approach. This is the main challenge facing schools today. After all, the implementation of BNCC requires, for many educators, a new look at the construction of the curriculum.
Therefore, it is essential to use all available resources. The Federal Government, through MEC, created a program to support the implementation of the BNCC. However, schools also have other options at their disposal. Currently, there are specialized companies that make it possible to apply these concepts in the classroom and simplify the insertion of educators and students in this new model.
